Estate planning is a specialism, not a sideline

Inheritance tax is rising up more and more estates as the nil-rate bands stay frozen and house prices climb. The £325,000 nil-rate band has not moved in over a decade, the £175,000 residence band tapers away above a £2m estate, and from April 2026 Business and Agricultural Relief are capped, with unused pensions due to be brought into inheritance tax from April 2027. Families who assumed they were under the threshold increasingly are not.

Getting it wrong is expensive and usually invisible until it is too late. The seven-year gifting rules, gifts out of surplus income, trusts, the residence band and the reliefs all interact, and a general accountant who rarely sees them tends either to miss legitimate savings or to play so safe that the estate overpays. The cost lands on the next generation, often as a forced sale to pay a tax bill that planning could have softened.

We handle inheritance tax and estate planning as core work: modelling your estate, using the allowances and reliefs properly, setting up trusts where they genuinely help, and supporting executors through probate. Tell us about your situation and we come back within 48 hours with a fixed written quote, with no obligation to proceed.

THE BRIEF

Different estates need different planning

From growing families to business owners and executors, each situation calls for specific inheritance tax and estate expertise.

Families & parents

Couples and parents who want to pass on the family home and savings to children and grandchildren, using both nil-rate bands and the residence band, and protecting inheritances for the next generation.

High-net-worth individuals

Larger estates above the £2m threshold, where the residence band tapers away and a layered plan of gifting, trusts and reliefs makes a material difference to the eventual inheritance tax bill.

Business & farm owners

Owners relying on Business or Agricultural Relief, now capped from April 2026, who need to plan succession so the next generation inherits the business or farm without a forced sale to pay tax.

Landlords & property owners

Property portfolios that drive an estate over the threshold and create liquidity problems on death, where ownership structure, gifting and the interaction with capital gains tax all need handling together.

Retirees & later-life planning

Those arranging their affairs in later life: drawing pensions in the right order, making regular gifts from surplus income, and getting the estate in order while there is time for the seven-year rule to work.

Executors & the bereaved

Executors facing the inheritance tax account, valuations and probate, who need the IHT calculated correctly and the estate administered properly, with the tax paid on time.

Estate-planning across the UK

Inheritance tax is a UK-wide concern, but the details shift by nation and circumstance. The nil-rate bands and the main IHT rules apply across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, while Scotland has its own rules of succession and its own approach to wills and estates that we account for in any Scottish plan.

Wherever you are, the core planning is the same: using both nil-rate bands and the residence band, the seven-year gifting rules, gifts out of surplus income, trusts where they help, and Business and Agricultural Relief, all kept current as the rules change between 2026 and 2027. Professional advice tailored to your estate makes a real, measurable difference to what your family eventually keeps.

We work with clients across the whole of the UK, offering both remote service and, where useful, local meetings, so you can reach genuine estate-planning expertise wherever you live.

London & South East: London, Reading, Brighton, Guildford, Oxford, St Albans, Sevenoaks

High property values push many estates well over the threshold, with the residence band frequently tapering away; layered gifting and trust planning is common.

Midlands: Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Wolverhampton

A mix of family estates and owner-managed businesses relying on Business Relief, where the April 2026 cap makes succession planning newly urgent.

North West: Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Bolton, Chester, Salford

Growing property values and family businesses, with strong demand for straightforward, cost-effective planning and probate support.

North East & Yorkshire: Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull, Newcastle, York

Family estates, farms and small businesses where Agricultural and Business Relief and clean succession planning matter most.

South West & Wales: Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, Exeter, Swansea, Cheltenham

Significant farmland and family-business wealth alongside rising residential values, with strong need for relief and succession advice.

Scotland & Northern Ireland: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Belfast

UK-wide inheritance tax rules combined with distinct Scottish succession law, so we tailor Scottish plans to that difference.

Estate-planning coverage across the UK

We advise on inheritance tax and estate planning for clients throughout the UK, wherever you and your estate are based.

Clear, fair fees for estate-planning advice

We quote transparently, usually a fixed fee for a planning review or estate administration, agreed before any work starts.

Inheritance Tax Planning Review

£750 – £2,500

Estate valuation, exposure calculation, allowances and reliefs review, written plan with recommended steps · One-off review

Fees depend on the size and complexity of the estate and how many assets need valuing. A straightforward review of a single home and savings sits at the lower end; estates with trusts, business interests or property abroad sit higher. Most specialists quote a fixed fee for the review before any work starts.

Trust Setup & Administration

£1,000 – £3,500

Trust type advice, setup, HMRC Trust Registration Service, ten-year and exit charge calculations, annual trust tax returns · Setup, then annual

Setting up a trust is usually a fixed fee; running it adds an annual cost for accounts, the Trust Registration Service and any tax returns. Relevant property trusts with periodic and exit charges cost more to administer than simpler arrangements. A specialist will tell you the likely ongoing cost before you commit.

Wills & Estate Structuring (tax review)

£500 – £1,500

Review of the tax consequences of your will, ownership and beneficiary structuring, pension nomination review, coordination with your solicitor · One-off review

This is the accountancy and tax side of getting your estate in order; the will itself is drafted by a solicitor. Fees reflect the complexity of the estate and whether trusts or business assets are involved. Many specialists offer a fixed-fee review that runs alongside your solicitor's will drafting.

Probate & Estate Administration

£1,500 – £6,000

Estate valuation, HMRC inheritance tax account, tax calculation and payment, probate application support, estate accounts · Per estate

Estate administration is usually priced per estate, either as a fixed fee or, for larger estates, a percentage of the estate value. A simple estate with one property is at the lower end; estates with multiple properties, business interests, lifetime gifts to trace or disputes cost more. Get the basis of charge confirmed in writing before instructing.

Lifetime Gifting Strategy

£500 – £1,500

Gifting capacity review, use of annual and surplus-income exemptions, seven-year planning, record-keeping system for executors · One-off, with optional reviews

A gifting plan is normally a fixed fee, with optional periodic reviews as your circumstances and the rules change. The work pays for itself by using exemptions, particularly gifts out of surplus income, that families routinely miss. Costs rise where gifts interact with trusts or capital gains tax.

Business Relief & Succession Planning

£1,500 – £5,000

Business and Agricultural Relief review against the April 2026 cap, succession structuring, lifetime transfer planning, life cover and instalment planning to fund any tax · Planning project

Succession planning for a business or farm is priced as a project, scaled to the size of the business and the complexity of ownership. The April 2026 cap on 100% relief has made this work materially more valuable. Specialists usually scope and fix the fee after an initial conversation about the business and the family.

Common questions about estate planning and inheritance tax

Estate-planning accountants work day to day with inheritance tax: the nil-rate bands and residence band, the seven-year gifting rules and taper relief, gifts out of surplus income, trusts and their charges, and Business and Agricultural Relief. A general accountant may file your tax return well but rarely sees these often enough to plan confidently. The difference usually shows up as inheritance tax that could have been legitimately reduced, or reliefs that were available but missed. We work alongside your solicitor, who drafts the will itself.

Get your estate in order

Whether you are planning ahead to reduce inheritance tax, setting up a trust, passing on a business, or administering an estate, the first step is the same short form.
